NINES will involve the installation of a lead acid battery. The battery will have the ability to store 1MW of electrical energy and will be installed at Lerwick Power Station. The battery will be used to take or provide electricity according to generation and network characteristics.
This will help stabilise the energy system in Shetland in a more environmental and cost effective manner than traditional network reinforcement costs.
Objectives of the Battery project are to:
- improve the operation of the Lerwick Power Station
- provide information to the Shetland Repowering project
- provide improved management of network constraints
- help to facilitate additional renewable energy connection
This trial will provide significant insight into the installation and operation of MW scale batteries and provide high quality research data for SSE Future Networks and the NINES programme.
