Active Network Management provides the capability for devices to control different aspects of the networks operation. The anticipated benefits for the Shetland’s energy system include:

  • Ability to easily detect any faults on the system
  • Ability to prevent outages from happening
  • Ability to connect around 10MW of new renewable generation to the network. The generators would connect under a new ‘flexible’ connection agreement, which would allow their output to be reduced at times when the system cannot accommodate their full output.
  • Facilitate the use of energy storage to help balance the network, making it more reliable and efficient.

Active Network Management will make the Shetland’s energy infrastructure “smarter” – reducing energy losses and waste, utilising technologies only when required, and making electricity supply more reliable.
