NINES is trialling a number of groundbreaking technologies to make Shetland’s energy system more efficient and affordable. For instance, NINES is trialling a 1 MW battery to manage fluctuations in supply and demand to make the best use of generation and electricity network assets.

We are helping to fulfil Shetland’s renewable energy potential, and involving customers in new demand side management programmes.  In addition, the implementation of an active network management system will provide the ability to control the various technologies. As such Shetland will see the implementation of one of the first smart grids in the UK, building on our experience of developing the Orkney Smart Grid.

The trials will run until 2016 and include the involvement of up to 734 domestic customer properties. You can find more about each aspect of our trials by clicking below.
